This is what I interpret Davis Ash as describing. Here's the meaning of life and the universe in one very short lesson. You don't need to be a physicist to understand this version! :-

How the Universe Works

Take the tiniest imaginable piece of energy and spin it like a ball on a string.

At the same time, make its orientation change continuously, so rapidly that, instead of looking like a spinning disc, it looks like a sphere.

Now, consider a gyroscope. If you set a gyroscope spinning and place it on your hand, when you move your hand sideways in any direction, the gyroscope tries to remain where it is. This is "inertia" - the tendency of an object to stay where it is.

With this principle in mind, think of the spinning energy sphere as a gyroscope that is spinning and changing orientation rapidly, too. Now you have a particle that is reluctant to move in any direction because it has inertia. This is what gives matter its "solidity".

This is the fundamental "particle" of which our universe is made. Clump a bunch of them together and you have an atom. Clump a bunch of these together and you have a molecule. Clump a bunch of those together and you have a table or an elephant. This is how matter is created and this is why matter has "inertia". (Try pushing an elephant.)
